Having worked through the process of creating a Wikipedia citation for the 1933 re-issue of the first edition of the OED using the Cite book template, it is now time to deploy it.
The first job is to start my user page and drop the model citation onto it, with a link to the construction notes post, and ask for comments. No-one will see it, so I don't expect any feedback.
The next step is to edit the table of Oxford English Dictionary Publications in the OED article to include the 1933 Supplement as an independent publication under the title, 'A New English Dictionary.' The table isn't actually part of the main content of the OED article. For some reason it exists as an independent template (that is only used on one page), which seems a bit overcomplicated. Anyway, making the change wasn't complicated, though I'd better add the template to my Watchlist to make sure the change sticks.
Now I can split the 1933 reference. First I checked all of the references to determine which needed to be split off, a-l were all to the historical introduction so only reference m needs to use the new citation.
The change was just a matter of editing the section and dropping in a new <refname=></ref> pair to include the cite book model citation. I did alter it slightly to drop the title-link field in order to avoid a circular reference.
Finally, the section text needs to be altered slightly. The current text,
Between 1928 and 1933, enough additional material had been compiled to make a one-volume supplement, so the dictionary was reissued as the set of 12 volumes and a one-volume supplement in 1933.[18] This 13 volume edition was subsequently reprinted in 1961 and 1970.
was altered to,
By 1933 enough additional material had been compiled to publish a one-volume supplement.[18] Also in 1933 the entire dictionary was re-issued under the title "The
Oxford English Dictionary" as a set of 12 volumes and a one-volume supplement,[26] this 13 volume edition was subsequently reprinted in 1961 and 1970.
So another set of edits and I'm a bit further down the rabbit hole. However I am not forking off to improve the OED Publications table, or the Cite book template article. Instead I'll try climbing back out by looking at creating a specific model citation for a word.
PS Altering the table attracted another editor to list the table as a template for deletion. I was considering asking whether this should be done on the OED talk page, but it seemed to be wandering off-mission. However as the process has started I'll put my twopenn'orth in to support the merge and deletion of the template. I have no idea how to delete a page (I don't even think I can) so I'll just watch what happens; it looks like the RFC process will end after a week.
PPS The RFC on merging and deleting OED publications table came back with a delete decision. Apparently the next step was to move to a
Holding Cell and leave the code for the table on the template page until the merge has happened.
PPPS All done and dusted, the table was moved and any references to the template now point to the outcome of the Template for Discussion log.
