Labels are Blogger's way of allowing a user to divide posts into different categories. They appear at the end of a post as a hyperlink that, when clicked, will present a set of posts with similar content.
They aren't indexed for search engine purposes, but are there to provide readers with a way to focus in on other posts that they are interested in, rather than reading through a blog that is displayed in date order. The labels can also be read by a Gadget (a program that will present blog-related information, usually in a side bar or footer) to create a list or word cloud of the labels. But that is a further set of tools that I don't want to get into yet.
There aren't really any rules as to how to choose or present the labels. But the rule of thumb seems to be, not too many words per label and not too many labels per post; generally no more than 3 of each.
The labels are ordered alphabetically (well strictly in ASCI character set order starting with ! - character 0021). Obviously the more labels you use the more unwieldy this system will become.

Adding your first label
- First select the post you want the label to be applied to.
- Then hit the label icon, which will bring up a drop-down box with New label… as the only choice.
- Select this option and a dialog box will open.
- Enter the name of the label you want to create/use and select OK.
- The label should now be displayed after the post title in grey italics.
Using existing labels
Once the labels are on the system they can be selected from the labels drop-down box and applied to the selected posts. The labels are ordered alphabetically (well strictly in ASCI character set order starting with ! - character 0021). Removing a label from a post
Simply select the post from which you want to remove the label. Then select the label from the drop-down box and it will be removed from the post.
What if you mispell a label or want to remove it?
To remove a label from the blog simply delete all occurrences of it from your posts. You can use the labels search tool from the posts nav bar to identify all posts which have the label to be removed and complete the operation in a single process.
